WB Reportedly Done With Affleck And Cavill As Batman And Superman

Let’s just get this out of the way. Chances are extraordinarily high that this isn’t the first time you’ve seen this particular headline recently. In fact, our very own MFR has weighed in numerous times over the past year on both Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill’s positions as the DCU‘s iteration of the World’s Finest. Just the same though, the time has come once again to reiterate what the trades have been saying as of late.

In Variety‘s recent report on the current status of the untitled Flash solo movie, the site also reported a brief note on the two-thirds of DCU‘s big name leads that aren’t Wonder Woman, stating, “Following the box office disappointment of “Justice League,” Warner Bros. has been reevaluating its approach to making movies based on DC Comics characters. The studio is not moving forward with Batman and Superman movies featuring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, respectively. It is expected to recast the Dark Knight with a different actor.

Is it anything new? No, not really. It’s just yet another report from yet another reliable part of the trades saying what a number of DCU fans don’t want to hear. I get it, this news isn’t pleasant. Especially if you really loved either actor’s take on their character. As MFR stated recently, this is especially bad for Superman fans as the character will likely return backstage for several years of inactivity before Warner Bros opt to move forward with a new actor and solo film. That said, this might be for the best in the long run. Sometimes, as much as it can hurt to let things go, a clean break is necessary.

I remember my disappointment in realizing that Andrew Garfield would have to be recast as Spider-Man when Marvel Studios was finally able to work out their deal with Sony to incorporate the character into the MCU several years ago. As frustrating as the films he starred in were, Garfield himself was a wonderful choice for the part. And yet in the process of breaking away from Garfield, fans now have arguably the finest live action portrayal of Peter Parker and Spidey ever in Tom Holland.

Hopefully The Batman director Matt Reeves and whoever ends up helming the next Superman film will be able to find similarly worthy successors to the roles in the near future.

What do we make of this latest claim that we’ve seen the last of Affleck as Batman and Cavill as Superman? Be sure to leave your thoughts below!
