14 Under The Radar Films You Should Know About
Title: Captive State
Release Date: March 29, 2019
This flick looks like the movie that Extinction should have been. John Goodman has been doing some masterful work in recent years, and this looks like no exception. Yes, if you Google this you’ll see that it stars Machine Gun Kelly but don’t judge too harshly, this looks like it has the potential to be a fun bit of sci-fi with a fresh take.
Title: Missing Link
Release Date: April 19, 2019
Animated movies not made by Disney or Dreamworks seem to sneak up on people. That’s the case here. Annapurna Pictures, who have released some great things (American Hustle, Her, and Zero Dark Thirty, just to name a few) is putting out this story, which according to IMDb, is about “The charismatic Sir Lionel Frost considers himself to be the world’s foremost investigator of myths and monsters. The trouble is none of his small-minded high-society peers seems to recognize this. Sir Lionel’s last chance for acceptance by the adventuring elite rests on traveling to America’s Pacific Northwest to prove the existence of a legendary creature. A living remnant of Man’s primitive ancestry. The Missing Link.” The cast includes Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, Emma Thompson, Timothy Olyphant, Zach Galifianakis and Stephen Fry. This one feels like a fun story that would get more attention if it were a Pixar film or something like that.
Title: The Aftermath
Release Date: April 26, 2019
The Aftermath stars Alexander Skarsgard and Keira Knightley as a British Colonel and his wife, who must live in Hamburg, Germany during post-war reconstruction. Tensions arise with the previous German owner of the house. This feels like one of the little quiet movies that could go on to win awards. That is just based off of first impressions though. I have nothing to go on other than the cast, a description, and one picture. I could be way off base, but it is best to keep this one in mind to be able to find out for yourself. It sounds intriguing to me.
Release Date: June 14, 2019
Yep. That Shaft. This franchise has been around for a long time, and Tim Story (Fantastic Four, Ride Along) is going to make it all come together. This is a sequel to the 2000 Shaft starring Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson will return in a story about his son – also Shaft – played by Jesse T. Usher (Independence Day: Resurgence). They aren’t stopping there though. This film will also bring back Richard Roundtree – the original Shaft – to unite all 3 generations. Can you dig it? This movie feels like it could be a ton of fun, especially if they let Jackson have some fun. The studio must have confidence in it, to give it such a prime summer release date.
Some of these could end up being duds, but they all some sort of element that makes them noteworthy. Which one intrigues you the most? Is there one I left off the list that you think is worth mentioning? Let us know.
