Tom Hardy Discusses The PG-13 Rating For Venom

We live in a world now where R-Rated superhero movies are hugely successful blockbusters. Logan and Deadpool are the best examples of this. When Venom had started filming, people wondered if that would follow suit. But it ended up being PG-13 like most of the superhero films.

In an interview with MTV, Venom star Tom Hardy weighed in on the rating. You can watch the interview below, but thanks to Cinemablend, we have the transcript of the relevant part.

“Is it going to be R-Rated? That’s the big question and the answers been answered, isn’t it?… It’s a PG-13 in the states, but to be fair the thing can fulcrum into R-Rated. It can fulcrum into youth or children. My littlest ones, they watch Spider-Man and Venom quite comfortably, and Venom toys appear and LEGO appear… So it’s not like they’re scared by him, and at the same time there’s a lot in the real estate that you can actually imbue with a complete sense of gratuitous violence if you really wanted to, and I think you’ve got the right people for that job if you want to push it. Of course that’s where I’d love to go with it.”

Venom is rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for language”. I don’t like when studios aim for certain ratings. Its always better when they tell whatever story they wanted to tell, and then get a rating. Tailoring it to a rating can spell trouble.

There were rumblings that the studio wanted a PG-13 rating so they could cross Venom over with Spider-Man in the future….but why couldn’t that happen if this movie was rated R? It doesn’t mean future endeavors couldn’t be PG-13.

Do you agree with what Hardy is saying here? Or do you think it should have been rated R?
