Eddie Murphy To Star In GRUMPY OLD MEN Remake

Eddie Murphy used to be a huge box office presence. He’s done a few projects here and there recently, but nothing huge. That might change now, as Eddie Murphy has been tapped to star in a remake of Grumpy Old Men.

Deadline reports that Murphy will team up with director Tim Story (Barbershop, Fantastic Four) to bring the story to life again.

There is no word on who will play the other leading role in the movie, but Deadline heard a perfect name being thrown around – Samuel L. Jackson. If that comes to fruition, I will buy a ticket right now.

The original 1993 version of Grumpy Old Men saw Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon star as two feuding neighbors, whose relationship only gets worse when a new woman (Ann-Margret) moves in across the street. It then spawned a sequel – Grumpier Old Men in 1995.

John Davis is producing Grumpy Old Men. He produced the original as well. This seems like it will be a straight up remake, not something like a “legacy-quel” where the leads know the originals, or move into the same house or something.

It will be nice to see a juggernaut like Murphy back in a leading role in a comedy. He’s been circling another one for a while. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been talking about doing a sequel to Twins called Triplets with Danny DeVito, and he wanted Murphy to play the third brother. It has been stuck in development for a while, but maybe getting made here soon. Perhaps it can start after Schwarzenegger wraps Terminator 6. Not to mention the always talked about Beverly Hills Cop 4, which I don’t think will ever happen, but hope to be proven wrong.

I remember watching the original when I was a kid, and not realizing what legends Matthau and Lemmon were. I borrowed the VHS from the library in order to see it. If you didn’t understand that sentence, please don’t tell me. I am having a rough enough week.

I would watch Murphy and Jackson together in anything. They have already appeared together in Coming To America, so this would be a reunion of sorts. It seems like a good vehicle for them to flex their talents with too.

Are you excited for a new version of Grumpy Old Men?
