RUMOR: Derek Mears To Play Titular Creature In Upcoming SWAMP THING Series

Following last week’s news that Crystal Reed had been selected to star as Abby Arcane in DC Universe’s upcoming Swamp Thing series, the titular role may have finally been selected too. According to Splash Report, Friday the 13th‘s Derek Mears is in talks to star in the show as the titular Swamp Thing creature.

It should be noted though, while Mears is reportedly playing Swamp Thing, the site adds that another actor will ultimately play his counterpart Dr. Alec Holland. As for that actor will be, Splash Report stated, “It is still unclear who will be playing Dr. Alec Holland.

Personally I dig the choice. I haven’t seen the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th in almost a decade, but I remember that Mears gave a good turn as Jason Voorhees, regardless of the quality of the whole film itself. I have no idea if Mears will be the one providing Swamp Thing’s voice or if he’ll be dubbed over in post-production by whatever actor is picked to play Dr. Holland, but as far as the physical body language and presence needed for the creature goes? I think Mears will nail that.

That said, I hope the producers do let Mears provide the voice for Swamp Thing too. I only just made the connection, but Mears previously made an appearance as one of the side-villains in Rooster Teeth’s animated web series RWBY in the past two seasons and his voice was rather eerie and intimidating there. The only reason I can think offhand for why someone might dub over Mears is “star power.”

Mears is no stranger to Comic Book properties. He played a Kree Captain in Agents of SHIELD, and most recently, he portrayed Sylbert Rundine AKA Dwarfstar on The Flash.

What do you think though? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments section below!
