Creative Team Behind HALLOWEEN Reboot Already Tossing Around Sequel Ideas

The new Halloween reboot hasn’t even released yet, and the creative team behind the film are already mulling over ideas for potential sequels. Writer-director David Gordon Green and co-writer Danny McBride confirm “early ideas“ for potential sequels.

“You know, I think we were just kind of — in our early ideas of it — just like, ‘what would you do if you could?’”

This recent quote from Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is of interesting note as we previously heard reports that McBride had initially thought of filming and releasing two films back-to-back. McBride’s previous quotes imply mapping out a few ideas for a potential Halloween sequel in this newly reinvented series, and with early buzz being positive we will likely get another film in the series from Blumhouse.

The Halloween franchise is clearly no stranger to reboots, or reinventions. The series recently went through a reboot with Rob Zombie’s 2007 Halloween and its sequel Halloween II. The lackluster performance of the latter left the newly rebooted franchise dead in the water which prompted Blumhouse Productions to sweep in and produce their own, “reinvention”. Blumhouse’s Halloween “reinvention” will not be the first the series will go through in this franchise’s long history, the previous entry to reinvent itself was Halloween H2O: 20 Years Later. H2O chose to omit any Halloween film after Halloween III: Season of the Witch, therefore creating the first splinter in the franchise timeline. At this point we have 4 different Halloween time lines.

Timeline Prime: Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.

Timeline 2 (First Reinvention): Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween H2O: 20 Years Later, and Halloween: Resurrection.

Timeline 3 (Zombie’s Reboot): Halloween (2007), and Halloween II (2009).

Timeline 4 (Blumhouse’s Reinvention): Halloween (1978), and Halloween (2018).

I hope this visual arrangement helps to identify where this film stands in comparison to the timeline and the rest of the franchise.

Another franchise that attempted this “reinvention” was Warner Bros Superman franchise. Superman Returns was essentially a sequel to a 26-year-old film, Superman II. The film ignored Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Superman Returns although received well, left the franchise directionless and lacked proper positioning for the character moving forward. We recently did a retrospective review about it.

The new Terminator film is taking that approach as well. It will ignore anything that came after Terminator 2.

Halloween is set to premier October 19 and with positive buzz, we are bound to get more news on any follow ups to this new chapter. Will this new film repeat the mistakes of Warner Bros Superman Returns? Last long enough to produce another sequel like Halloween Resurrection and then end?
