Feel The Need For…Patience? TOP GUN: MAVERICK Has Been Delayed
A lot has been happening on the Top Gun 2 front lately. The sequel was rumored for years, and after a satisfactory script, filming finally began with Tom Cruise reprising his role as Maverick. Cruise was essential, as the film is called Top Gun: Maverick.
The Hollywood Reporter has the news from Paramount that the film has been delayed nearly a year – from July 12, 2019 to June 26, 2020. This is to give everyone “more time for flight training.”
Top Gun: Maverick co-stars Miles Teller as Goose’s son, and a protege of sorts to Cruise’s Maverick.
It stinks that something that has been in development for so long has been delayed, but it’s good that they don’t have a “need for speed”. They are willing to slow things down and get it right. I have a feeling that this has to do with Cruise, who is a perfectionist and wants to do everything himself. That means he will be in a real cockpit of a real plane actually doing things up in the air.
The extra 11 months will give the crew an opportunity to truly deliver something visually spectacular. Cruise seems to want to up the ante with every film he does, and after Mission: Impossible – Fallout that is a very high bar to clear.
There have been many delays of big blockbuster flicks in recent history because of troubled productions. This doesn’t seem the case here. Instead, they seemed to see a way to increase the potential of the sequel, and Paramount was okay with them taking that. It should pay off for them in the long run.
The biggest pay off here is that it gives our Editor In Chief, Mario-Francisco Robles time to see the original one. Feel free to playfully tweet him some shame for having not done so yet.
The plot of Top Gun: Maverick revolves around Maverick teaching a new group of pilots, while also confronting the human vs drone debate.
Are you glad they are taking their time with this? Or would you rather have them rush it to production?
Top Gun: Maverick now hits theaters June 26, 2020.
