Shared universes are all the rage right now, and one of the quieter ones that is going pretty well is the one that was based off of James Wan’s horror film The Conjuring. The newest entry into that universe is The Nun, and in a featurette for that movie, The Aquaman director explains how the shared universe came to be.

You can watch the clip below:

For those that can’t watch, EW has the transcript:

“One of the things that occurred to all of us is, they have a superhero universe, why can’t we do that in the horror world? When we were making the first Conjuring, it became very apparent to us that there could be a bigger universe, so many other great stories that would be awesome to look into.”

The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 were popular movies, so The Nun has a built in fanbase already. The horror genre is often forgotten about, so its nice that they have a successful shared universe, when a lot of other genres can’t get it right.

I am not usually a horror fan, though in recent years I’ve enjoyed films such as Split, Get Out, and It. All I need is a compelling story and I am there. The films that have threadbare stories just there to string you from one gory jump scare to the next doesn’t do it for me. This shared universe seems to be doing something right though, so maybe it’s worth checking out.

The Nun hits theaters September 7th.

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in “The Conjuring 2,” as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.
