Ewan McGregor Insists There Are No Plans For A KENOBI Movie

Ewan McGregor was the best part of the Star Wars prequels. His take on Obi-Wan was one of the most genuine and emotional performances in the prequels. He has stated many, many, many, many times that he would love to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a standalone film.

He returned to voice the character in The Force Awakens when Rey had her first Force Vision. Until plans are concrete, there question will always come up, no matter where McGregor goes. Take The View for example. It’s a show that isn’t known for its Star Wars talk, but they brought it up because Disney is the best when it comes to synergy. When asked if he’d return to the role, McGregor responded:

“Yes, I would totally do it. There’s no plans as such to do it, as far as I know. I would be happy to do it. I think there must be a good story to tell, as they’re doing spinoffs. There’s likely to be a good Obi-Wan between maybe me Alec Guinness, in that time. “

After Solo: A Star Wars Story didn’t live up to expectations (which is dumb, because the movie is a whole lot of fun!), it was rumored that Lucasfilm was restructuring their approach at spinoffs. But then another rumor said that the Kenobi Movie was happening, but not theatrically. Instead it would debut on Disney’s new streaming service next year, just like the live action remake of Lady and the Tramp.

McGregor also mentioned to the ladies that he has discussed this ad nauseam too.

“I’ve answered yes so many times it looks like I’m sort of touting for work at Disney’s door.”

While Fanboy Garage co-host Aaron Virola doesn’t think the Kenobi spinoff should happen, I am of the mind that it is the only one with legacy characters that does make sense. Like McGregor says, there is totally a story in the 19 years between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope.

The truth is, no one really knows what Lucasfilm has planned post Episode IX. We know generalities, like a series of movies from the Game of Thrones showrunners, and a trilogy from Rian Johnson. But we have no details of that. I’d expect some sort of announcement soon, probably at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, or D23. Also, we need to consider that McGregor is flat out lying because he has to. There are rumors of him appearing in Episode IX, which might explain the beard. But I’m sure he knows more than he’s letting on.
