THE FLASH: Grant Gustin Comments On That Costume Leak And Body Shaming

Fandom can be an ugly, unfortunate thing sometimes. We here at RTF like to highlight the positive aspects of fandoms. After all, “fandom” spawns from your love from something. The way it turns to hate and vitriol is unfortunate. It’s happened with Doctor Who when the new Doctor was announced as female. It has happened with Justice League and the mess behind the scenes. Most famously, it has happened after Star Wars: The Last Jedi became so divisive. Now it’s rearing its ugly head at The Flash star Grant Gustin.

A – lets call it unfortunate – picture of Gustin’s new suit for the upcoming season of The Flash leaked. We won’t post it here, but it isn’t hard to find if you want to see it. While I did comment on the suit on Twitter, it was to point out that this could be partial or unfinished, with part of it off between takes for Gustin’s comfort. After all, Robert Downey Jr. looks ridiculous where red spandex pants and just the Iron Man chest armor. But it looks great in the finished product.

People are being nasty about, not only the suit, but about how skinny Gustin is. Gustin finally had enough, and commented about it on Instagram – the only social media platform he decided to keep after deleting Facebook and Twitter.

Read this if you have good enough eyes.

For those that can’t read it, here is the relevant portion from ComicBook.com:

“I’m happy with my body and who I am and other kids who are built like me and thinner than me should be able to feel the same way. Not only that, but they should be able to feel like THEY could be a superhero on tv or film or whatever it may be someday. I love the suit that has been designed for me, and I think when everyone sees it in its entirety, you will love it too.”

A few things to glean from this:

  • Don’t ever judge anything by a leak. The finished product always looks better. Like I mentioned above, this doesn’t look like a great take on Iron Man, now does it?

  • If Gustin is healthy, which he certainly seems to be, then his weight shouldn’t be an issue for any of us.
  • Representation matters. That doesn’t just mean skin color, religion (or lack there of), sexual orientation or gender. It means size also.

I for one can’t wait until I am able to see the fully realized suit for season 5. I did love the one from last season, with the yellow accents added in. So I hope it lives up to that.

The 5th season of The Flash premieres Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m only on The CW.

Matching wits with The Thinker, who by season’s end had harnessed the powers of all twelve bus metas he created, stretched Team Flash to their limits, but with the help of some new allies, Barry Allen (aka The Flash) and company were able to put a stop to the Enlightenment and save Central City once again. However, with the arrival of Barry and Iris’ speedster daughter, Nora, who arrived from the future admitting to having made a “big mistake,” things are anything but status quo. Will parenthood be the challenge that finally slows The Flash down?
