Director Alan Taylor Returns To THE SOPRANOS For The Prequel, THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK!

I have a confession to make: I don’t have much familiarity with HBO’s classic show, The Sopranos. I know how the show ends, but beyond that I know very little about the series. That said, while this news might not be particularly exciting for me personally, I’d wager there’s absolutely a crowd out there that’s happy about this new nugget of information.

TheWrap reports that Alan Taylor has been selected to helm a prequel film to the show titled The Many Saints of Newark, which will be co-written by series creator David Chase and Lawrence Konner. Chase will also produce the film. While Taylor might be more commonly recognized these days as the director of Thor: The Dark World and Terminator Genisys, the filmmaker actually has a notable history with The Sopranos, having directed episodes for four of the show’s six seasons. Taylor even won the 2007 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for the sixth season episode, “Kennedy and Heidi.”

As for the film’s plot, TheWrap stated:

The film takes place in the 1960s, when riots swept through Newark, New Jersey and conflicts between African-American and Italian residents were at their worst. Several characters from the “Sopranos” are expected to appear in the film, though New Line would not disclose further plot details.

Honestly, despite my lack of familiarity with the show, this sounds like quite an interesting premise to explore. I think I should probably go back and watch the show to get more familiar with the lore just in case though.

As for the director himself, while Taylor doesn’t have quite the best track record for feature films so far, he has done really good work on television in the past. Aside from his aforementioned association with The Sopranos, Taylor has also helmed episodes from other critically acclaimed shows like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Electric Dreams.

What do you think though? Do you wish Chase had opted for another filmmaker that worked on the show? Whatever your thoughts are, be sure to share them with us in the comments section down below!
