BETTER CALL SAUL Will Have Many Connections To BREAKING BAD In Season 4

As a prequel to Breaking Bad, we all know who Jimmy McGill will turn into, and where he will end up by the end of Better Call Saul. But the show has done an extraordinary job of find its own identity and breaking out of the shadow of its parent show.

There’s been a few direct Breaking Bad connections already – Jonathan Banks is a series regular, reprising his role as Mike Ehrmantraut. Giancarlo Esposito also showed up as Gus Fring, among others like Nacho Varga, and Hector Salamanca. But for the post part, the show has its own identity.

Four seasons in, the show has to continue to take steps forward to Jimmy McGill’s inevitable fate, regardless of how series star Bob Odenkirk wants to postpone it. The geniuses behind the show were at the Hollywood summit in New York and said that is indeed happening. The overlap between the two shows will start to be more noticeable. The Hollywood Reporter was there to capture their responses.

“Season four is so good,” Gilligan told The Hollywood Reporter and other media during a “Masterclass with Better Call Saul” panel. “It gets darker, it gets richer. It’s still got funny in it, but on the Venn diagram of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, the overlap in the center is getting bigger and bigger.”

Gilligan went on to confirm that a character from Breaking Bad would be appearing:

“There is a very important character — I’m not promising you ever saw this character, but there was a very important character nonetheless from the Breaking Bad era who we’re going to meet this year. You’re going to be impressed with him.”

Later the producers confirmed the character in question was Lalo – a character never seen on screen but mentioned by Saul in his first ever appearance on the show. You can watch the clip of the mention below:

If that is too obscure for you, no worries. There are more Breaking Bad surprises on the way, teases Executive Producer Melissa Bernstein.

“[Other than Lalo], we have a couple of new characters that we’ll be reintroducing to the world,” she added. “We probably don’t want to say who yet, just to preserve the fun of that for the fans.”

You can keep your Game of Thrones, your Westworld and your This Is Us. Better Call Saul is the best show currently on TV. For Gilligan and Gould to have pulled off what they have already is extraordinary. If they can cap it off with a neat bow, where the transformation of Jimmy to Saul is complete and it bleeds seamlessly in to Breaking Bad, then it will keep that title. If they can do that and turn it into a post-Breaking Bad sequel, then we might be looking at one of the greatest shows ever. I cannot wait for the show to return. It’s not long now.

Better Call Saul returns Monday, August 6 at 9/8 C only on AMC.
