Ava DuVernay Offers Update on DC’s NEW GODS

One of the biggest surprises this year so far has been the news that Ava DuVernay would direct an adaptation of the New Gods.

When reports surfaced that the Selma and A Wrinkle in Time director would helm the film (which DuVernay quickly confirmed on her Twitter account), fans couldn’t contain their excitement. Since that news broke, very little has come out about the New Gods project.

This past weekend, DuVernay took to Twitter to offer fans a little update on how things are progressing on the film.

DuVernay also dropped a little bit of information that it was she that approached Warner Bros. and DC to do New Gods.

DuVernay’s tweets should delight fans who have been wondering on what the status of the New Gods film was and it also shows that Warner Bros. is further committing to a more director-focused approach to their DC films. In the past, we have seen the studio ask directors (such as James Wan and John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein) which films they would like to do, but this is one of the times where the director had an idea of which film they would like to do and they pitched their idea to the studio.

The New Gods series, which was created by Jack Kirby in the early 1970’s, introduced fans to the heaven-like planet New Genesis, the hellish Apokolips and to characters like Orion, Mister Miracle, Big Barda and Darkseid. Elements of the New Gods were introduced in previous DC universe films like Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Though it may be a while before DuVernay puts her full-attention to New Gods, it’s great that the director gave the fans an idea of how far along the film is. Fans have been waiting to see these large-than-life characters on the big screen and, perhaps, if all things go well for the DC film franchise going forward, we’ll get to see them interact with the other DC heroes sooner rather than later.
