FAST & FURIOUS 9 Lands a New Writer

It looks like Universal is changing some parts in the Fast & Furious machine.

According to THR, writer Daniel Casey will be writing Fast & Furious 9, replacing series writer Chris Morgan. Morgan, who has written every F&F script since 2006’s Tokyo Drift, will be handling the script for the upcoming Hobbs & Shaw spinoff.

Coming off the horror film – Kin – for Lionsgate, Casey will pen the script for Fast 9 director Justin Lin, who directed four of the entries in the franchise. Lin, who also started on the franchise with Toyko Drift, will direct Fast 9 and 10.

Fans may not like the change, as Morgan has given fans of the series some of its best moments. However, the series has started to show some fatigue in the storytelling department coming off 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, so a changing of the guard may be for the best.

With Casey getting notices for his scripts for Kin and the J.J. Abrams-produced The Heavy – which is a subversive take on the superhero genre, this may be the move to help the story of Dominic Toretto and his merry band of outlaws get across the finish line.

Fast & Furious 9 is scheduled for an April 2020 release.
