*** THERE WILL BE SPOILERS IN THIS ARTICLE FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. TURN BACK NOW IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE***

There is a lot to digest in Avengers: Infinity War, and the two people with all the answers are in hot demand right now to do just that, answer!

Joe and Anthony Russo talked to Variety about the end of the film, and about the trust Marvel has in them ever since they were hired to do Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

“When we started working with Marvel on ‘Winter Soldier,’ we wanted to do such a radical departure from their first [Captain America] film,” Joe Russo says. “We said, ‘The character is moving forward in time. The interpretation we’re interested in is much more modern than what you had done on the last one,’ and they said, ‘Great. Do it. Let’s see what happens.’ So they’ve always been risk-takers … If you look at every film we’ve done for Marvel, there are huge, game-changing events at the end of the movies. We are interested in pushing the boundaries and pushing the story forward in unexpected ways, surprising the audience as much as we can.”

They certainly did do that. But while what was done in their other movies – Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War was permanent, the aftermath of the events of Avengers: Infinity War might not be. After all, we know there will be a Spider-Man 2 and a Black Panther 2 in the near future.

“I will say this: There is a real commitment on our end to the stakes,” Anthony Russo says. “Yes, this is a fantasy world, and yes, remarkable things can happen in a fantasy world, but-“

Joe finishes the thought: “They come at an incredibly high cost. For us, there will always be stakes and the stakes have been progressing from film to film. And I think you can extrapolate that they will continue to deepen in ‘Avengers 4.’”

The way that I interpreted that is that some people will make it back, but not all. They can’t all make it back fine, or the movie becomes pointless. But rescuing some, while leaving others will haunt some characters, and that can be used to tell other stories.

Maybe it’s time travel, maybe its a purgatory like place like where the Soul Stone was housed, but we’ll see those characters again. Perhaps Captain Marvel will shed some light on things in March of 2019. While the film takes place predominantly in the 90s, it could have bookends in the present day like Captain America: The First Avenger did.
