Who Ya Gonna Call? Paul Feig!…If Sony Wants a GHOSTBUSTERS 2, That Is
Paul Feig, the director of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot made an appearance at, yep, you guessed it – CinemaCon. While there, he was asked about a sequel to the female-led reboot, and had this to say:
“We would love [to make another movie], it’s really up to the studio. We had so much fun making that movie. The movie’s just really built an audience in the two years since it’s been out. I get contacted every day by people who are such fans of it, and so many women who are inspired by seeing women in science. I will go to my grave so proud of that movie, and so proud of what that cast did in that film.”
The issues I had with film were not from the cast. The cast was actually pretty great. It was the forgettable villain, sloppy storytelling, and wanting to have a separate identity from the Ivan Reitman films, while simultaneously leaning on them that made a mess of things. The film tried to have its cake and eat it too, and fell short because of it. [Editor’s Note from MFR: “It was like watching someone play an RPG and seeing them choose the least interesting option at every possible fork in the road.”]
Worse movies have gotten sequels however, so I say they should get another shot. Make the sequel use an “alternate dimension” gimmick, so the new team can meet the original Ghostbusters (there is a comic book that made this happen). Or just take an enormous step back, evaluate what worked (the cast) and what didn’t (the rest), and learn, grow and evolve from past mistakes. I’d give a movie trying to do that a chance.
Ghostbusters is not going away. The question is what form will it take when it returns? We’ll find out eventually.
What do you want from a new Ghostbusters movie?
