NEW MUTANTS Set to be a “Full-Fledged” Horror Film
The New Mutants continues to be a true enigma in the comic book movie genre.
With it constantly changing release dates and news that Fox may be planning to reshoot nearly half the film, fans are asking what the heck is going on with this X-Men spin-off.
In an interview with EW, actor Charlie Heaton, who plays Cannonball in the film, said that the reshoots are benefiting the film and the studio is looking to make it a full-on horror flick.
It’s basically about these mutants in a facility for damaged mutants. It’s a story about these characters coming to grips with who they are and it’s a horror X-Men movie, which we haven’t seen before. I feel like, for an X-Men movie, yeah, I think they’re going full-fledged horror. Without saying too much — I really don’t want to give away too much what it’s about, it’s very under wraps — but it is, in terms of anything we’ve seen in the X-Men world, it definitely is a horror film. It’s scarier than anything we’ve seen in that genre.
Rumors of Fox doing reshoots to make The New Mutants a full-blown horror film surfaced months back after the studio saw the success of other horror films like It and wanted to replicate that. After an initial round of test screenings didn’t impress, Fox decided to push the film back to give filmmakers more time to work on the film. The idea of going full horror may help it stand out more from the other comic book movies that are set to come out.
With fan skepticism growing over the film and Fox looking to turn The New Mutants into its on franchise, will the reshoot gamble work out for the studio? And will any of this matter once the deal with Disney goes through and Marvel regains control over the X-Men characters?
The New Mutants is currently scheduled for an August 2 release.
