*UPDATE* Rumor: A DEADPOOL 2 Villain Has Had Their Part In The Film REDUCED

UPDATE

Shortly after we published this rumor from The Tracking Board, Deadpool 2 writer Rhett Reese took to twitter to simply state it’s “Untrue.” And now the good folks over at Collider are clarifying that Kesy’s role in the film has not been cut, but rather simply reduced.

So we should still all expect to see him, but not in as large a capacity as initially intended.

ORIGINAL REPORT

Superhero sequels sometimes have a tendency to be bloated and overly complex, much to their detriment. Films like Iron Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 were maligned for having too many pointless subplots and villains, which turned them into sloppy narrative messes with some fun moments (Don’t tell Jon I said that about Iron Man 2). A new rumor suggests that Deadpool 2 may be trying to avoid that trope.

The Tracking Board’s Jeff Sneider went on Meet the Movie Press and dropped the info – Jack Kesy – who was supposed to be the film’s main antagonist – has been edited out of Deadpool 2. Kesy was rumored to have been playing Black Tom Cassidy. Wikipedia describes his character as follows:

Black Tom Cassidy (Thomas Samuel Eamon Cassidy) is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character is usually depicted as an enemy of the X-Men, and of his cousin, Banshee. In addition to fighting the X-Men, he has clashed with Deadpool a number of times.

Black Tom is a mutant who can manipulate, bond with, and project energy through plant life. He is also capable of issuing concussive blasts with a wooden object, usually a shillelagh. Tom was the black sheep of a prominent Irish family. He secretly raised Banshee’s daughter Siryn, of whose existence Banshee was unaware, and conscripted her into his criminal gang. Black Tom was also a longtime criminal partner of the super-strong villain Juggernaut, until Juggernaut’s reformation.

The apparent cutting of Kesy’s character from the film sheds some light on what our Editor-in-Chief has been saying on the El Fanboy Podcast lately, which is that the film had undergone a bunch of last minute reshoots up until as recently as March 29 in Vancouver. If it’s true that Black Tom has been cut, it’s a pretty safe bet that’s what the reshoots and additional photography were mainly for.

There is a lot there that would be fun to explore in a Deadpool movie, but judging by the latest trailer the narrative seems to be focusing on Deadpool protecting a child from Cable (Josh Brolin), who has time traveled to the past to kill him. There is enough there to make a fun entertaining movie without Kesy’s character. To crowd it with another plot involving Black Tom might hurt the quality of the film. Maybe they’ll set him up to be the villain in Deadpool 3 or X-Force, once Deadpool has slapped some sense into Cable and they join forces.

I’ll wait until May 18th to determine whether this was a good choice or not. That is when Deadpool 2 will be in theaters everywhere.
