Alden Ehrenreich Compares SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY to ‘A Biopic’

The excellent new trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story dropped yesterday. It had a very different vibe to it, having the feel of a fun and colorful heist flick. The movie comes out in less than two months, and the cast is starting to do press for it. Talking to Kinowetter, Ehrenreich had this to say about the film:

“I think this movie is a great adventure story, and it’s a great adventure story that’s kind of a biopic in the way of a fictional character. So you’re watching this story unfold and enjoying the high excitement of that. And then at the same time, there’s more of a focus on character and how he changes, I think, than you typically get in that kind of movie.”

Solo is the first movie where Han is the main character – or supposed to be anyway. He’s always been a supporting character in one way or another. The Saga Films are about the Skywalkers. Even all of the trailers we’ve seen for Solo focus a lot on the ancillary stuff surrounding Solo: Chewie, Lando, The Falcon, Lando, The aesthetics of the new planets, Lando, the new characters, and Lando.

So while this was always branded as a “Han Solo Origin Story” it seems more than that. Maybe they figured out something that Pirates of the Caribbean didn’t. Captain Jack Sparrow is (was) a great character. But he was best used in that tertiary supporting role. When the movies focused on Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, they were stronger. When the franchise shifted to focus solely on Captain Jack as the main character, it suffered.

I hope that doesn’t happen here. The trailers do not suggest that it does. They seem to suggest they are telling a bigger story, and within it, we will get to see the formation of everyone’s favorite smuggler. The new trailer has me much less nervous for the film than I was previously, which is a good thing.

Consider me upgraded from “cautiously optimistic” to “intrigued.”

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters May 25, 2018.
