Not a bad start for Lady Croft.

Warner Bros./MGM’s Tomb Raider started its box office campaign on Thursday with an estimated $2.1 million, according to Deadline. The Alicia Vikander-starred vehicle is expected to finish its first weekend with a mid $20M opening. To compare, the 2001 film with Angelina Jolie opened with $47.7M.

However, it’s not expected to dethrone the current box office king, Black Panther. The Marvel film is expected to take the weekend with a high $20M finish. Black Panther would become the first film since 2009’s Avatar to finish at the top of the box office for five weeks in a row.

With a budget estimated at $90M, Tomb Raider should do decent numbers in the United States, while the worldwide numbers should help carry the film past the break-even point.

Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared. From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Tomb Raider is the story that will set a young and resolute Lara Croft on a path toward becoming a global hero. The film stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (The Wave), with Oscar-winner Graham King (The Departed) producing under his GK Films banner.
