Martin Scorcese’s THE IRISHMAN Budget Continues To Bloat

When Martin Scorcese makes a movie… he makes a movie. He spares no expense to assure that vision is fully realized and in making The Irishman, he seems to be surpassing even his own standards. Netflix originally bought the mob drama film for $105M and agreed to a budget of $125m. While that was the agreed budget though, The Irishman seems set to surpass Hugo in overall budget.

The Irishman is a film based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt. The book focuses on union official, Frank Sheeran who allegedly played a part in the famous 1975 disappearance of Teamsters Union head honcho, Jimmy Hoffa. Frank Sheeran is to be played by Academy Award Winner Robert De Niro and Jimmy Hoffa is to be played by Academy Award Winner Al Pacino. Honestly with just these two behemoths of acting in the leading roles, the movie is already worth several times over the price of admission.

Back in early February, it was reported that the films budget had jumped to $140 million and now, it has been reported that the budget has swelled to $175M and one source advises “they haven’t done the music yet.” Maybe the original budget number was a suggestion and not a fixed number?

Besides the ever increasing budget, the shoot, which had locations all over the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, started in August and just wrapped early March with Scorcese reportedly shooting for more than 106 days. This being the most time he has ever spent filming one project.

Besides the music and the elongated shoot schedule, there is still digital de-ageing effects that still need to get thrown on in post for some scenes that take place in 1959 in which De Niro will be made to look as if he is in his thirties. Less invasive than plastic surgery, eh?

Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano and Bobby Cannavale are also set to co-star in The Irishman which is slated for a 2019 release date.
