Character Descriptions And Plot Details for Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE Have Been Revealed

Making a movie based off of a theme park ride sounds like a dumb idea on paper. But the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has made billions for Disney. They are going to try their luck again, with a film that is based off their Jungle Cruise ride. To hedge their bets, they cast two of the most charismatic people working in Hollywood today – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt.

Johnson had been attached from the very beginning, and it was just announced last month that Emily Blunt would be joining him. Now, thanks to That Hashtag Show, we know who Johnson and Blunt are playing:

Frank (Francisco)
A witty riverboat captain cursed with immortality who takes Lily Houghton down the river.

Lily Houghton
Spunky scientist in search of the Tree of Life. Her quest is inspired in part by the death of her brother which was caused by an infectious disease.

Both descriptions offer up some fun details, and like Disney’s Pirates franchise, offer up some supernatural elements that were never part of the ride. Making Johnson’s character immortal is a good idea – for both parties. That means they plan on using his name for a long time, and Johnson will continue to get Disney Box Office money for the foreseeable future.

I’m a sucker for a good old fashioned Indiana Jones style adventure movie. This seems to be sailing in that direction. With Lucasfilm and Marvel, Disney isn’t hurting on the franchise front, but with Pirates of the Caribbean having seemingly ran its course, and the National Treasure franchise stalled indefinitely, a new adventure franchise from their parent label might be a welcome one. I’m certainly curious, especially if the rest of the cast turns out as great as the two leads.

Jaume Collet-Serra is set to direct, with production expected to begin in a few months. No release date has been set, but I’d expect it to drop in the summer of 2019, or early 2020.

What do you think of the Jungle Cruise movie?
