Rian Johnson Loves All of the STAR WARS Debates That Have Sprung Up Since THE LAST JEDI

Rian Johnson is a gifted filmmaker. He was able to make one of the biggest movies ever last year. When Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, it was one of the most polarizing reactions to a Star Wars film ever. For a movie that explores “the gray area” the reactions were anything but. People loved it more than the last one, or they hated it with a burning fiery passion. There didn’t seem to be any middle ground.

Johnson always loved reading the reaction his films have received, even when he just made low-budget indie flicks:

“I guess to me it’s less arguments, it’s more … I don’t know, and I’m still feeling my way forward in terms of how I do it. The truth is, since my first movie, Brick, which was a very small indie movie, I’ve been on the Internet and it’s always been a fun part of it for me, talking to the fans and talking to people and hearing their reactions to the movie and talking to them about it.”

There has been some pretty vile things said about the film and Johnson himself, but Johnson seems to take it in stride. He loves that fans are arguing about different aspects of The Last Jedi.

“It’s so good, it’s been such a blast for the past month. Like I feel like it was such a long buildup to putting the movie out there. Everyone involved put so much into it, and now to finally give it to the fans and just to see the explosion of people relating to it and people talking about it, people arguing about it, all the good stuff that you want when you put something out there, it’s been that all over the place. It’s been really wonderful and fun.”

Johnson is the quintessential film geek – any intelligent discussion about a film is good discussion. A discussion that he is excited to join as a viewer when Solo: A Star Wars Story comes out in May. When asked about the Solo preview during the Super Bowl, Johnson replied:

“I knew it was coming, but I was still… I was clicking, clicking, clicking, ‘yeah, yeah!’ And I think it looks so beautiful. I can’t wait for people to see more of the film – it’s so fun, it’s so funny. The cast is so charismatic, and I think they all just did a great job with it.”

Johnson seems genuinely enthusiastic about the Solo spinoff which is a good sign. He could have always given an antiseptic, generic answer. I guess we’ll see if people agree or disagree with Johnson once again when Solo: A Star Wars Story drops May 25th.
