DEADPOOL 2 to Have a “Heavier” Tone, Says Zazie Beetz
The first Deadpool was an in-your-face comedy, but also had underlying dark tone, mostly due to Wade Wilson’s terminal illness leading to his transformation into the Merc With the Mouth.
However, according to actress Zazie Beetz, Deadpool 2 will have a darker tone than its predecessor. Speaking to ComicBook.com, the Atlanta actress said that the tone of the sequel will be “heavier,” but comedy will continue to play a large part.
In Deadpool 2 I think we go heavier than the first one did. Like Atlanta, the themes are darker. I liked playing this woman who could meet Deadpool face-to-face and toe-to-toe. In terms of our wit and our banter, we match. It really was nice to play that.
The film being a bit more serious makes a lot of sense. As we’ve seen in previous footage, Josh Brolin’s Cable comes from a very bleak future. While we don’t know the exact reason why he makes a trip to the past, one would assume it is to change something in the past to save the future from looking so bleak. It’s also not unusual for sequels to go in deeper waters with already established characters.
While the film will a bit heavier in tone, I don’t expect it to overtake the zaniness that we’ve come to expect from Deadpool and the marketing has shown us not to expect it to.
The David Leitch-directed film also stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand and TJ Miller.
Deadpool 2 arrives on May 18.
