BREAKING: New STAR WARS Film Series Coming From GAME OF THRONES Creators!
It’s been known for a few months now that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was going to be the architect for an all new trilogy of films set in that galaxy far, far away. But now we’ve learned that he won’t be the only one forging a new path in the big sandbox that George Lucas created 40 years ago.
The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that Lucasfilm has hired David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to create another new series of Star Wars films!
If those names sound familiar, well, they should. These are the men responsible for bringing George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels to life in the form of a little series on HBO called Game of Thrones. They created the TV series and have been overseeing it since its inception, even taking it past the point where Martin has left off in his book series.
Here’s part of a statement on this high-profile hiring from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy:
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
Benioff and Weiss responded with their own joint statement about what it means to be making a new Star Wars film series:
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
As of now, it’s totally unknown what kind of story they intend to tell. All we know is that it won’t tie into Johnson’s trilogy, and it will not be part of the Skywalker saga.
Let the speculation begin about what kind of Star Wars story they plan on telling! Here’s hoping they’re as breathtakingly successful with the universe George Lucas created as they’ve been with the one George R.R. Martin came up with.
Something notable in all of this is how they’ve apparently been hired to create on a film series. Not just a standalone story, and not a trilogy. A series. Hmmmmm….
Lots to think about!
