Johnson Explains Why The Knights of Ren Were Absent From STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is filled with some questionable and unexpected scenes and twists. Some fans left theaters in disappointment and some left well satisfied but all did notice something missing from this Episode VIII in the Star Wars saga: there were no Knights of Ren. If you are not a heavy follower of the Star Wars galaxy let me give you a brief description, they Knights of Ren are the followers of Kylo Ren, some argue they have powers in the force as former students of Luke Skywalker, who turned to the dark-side. Others say they do not but at the end of the day they are epic killing machines who pledge their allegiance and service to their master Kylo Ren. You would think that with this kind of loyalty behind him there would be no doubt that they would be a part of the story. Yet director Rian Johnson saw otherwise. In an interview with Empire Film Podcast and shared by Cinemablend, Rian Johnson gives his explanation of why he left the Knights of Ren out of Star Wars: The Last Jedi:
“You can see we have a very full movie already. There literally was just not room for another element at them. I guess I could’ve used them in place of the Praetorian guards, but then it would feel like wasting them because I knew all those guards had to die pretty quickly. And if Kylo had some kind of connection to them, it would’ve added a complication that wouldn’t have helped the scene. So the truth is I just didn’t see a place for them in the movie.”
There are a few moments when we are given glimpses or mentions of the Knights of Ren. One time is when Supreme Leader Snoke mentions them and the other time is when Rey sees them in a vision surrounded by dead bodies set to a very awesome pouring rain scene, which only adds to our desire to see them in the film. Star Wars: Episode IX is coming to the screen in 2019 and we may see them make an appearance there under the direction of J.J. Abrams, but until then we will have to be satisfied with Rey’s vision.
